The MIG – MEMS Industry Group hosted its annual congress this time in Sonoma. Surrounded by vineyards mingling with MEMS experts, interested engineers, press and analysts was exhausting and fun. Hearing about the new wave of MEMS for microphones, medical devices, energy harvesting, silicon as a medical material made me aware in what leading edge environment I work. Some of the R&D projects might not become reality. But just listening to Professor Mauro Ferrari of the University of Texas talk about individual cancer treatment, fracture putty made from silicon, eye implants to measure glaucoma was incredible.
There are critics who say that the MEMS market grows too slowly, but after listening to experts, you’ll understand that these tiny chips will take time to become mainstream. But it is worth the time waiting…
