Brian Fuller joins Summit09 - Moderates 4 G

Most of you will have fond memories of Brian Fuller, his outspoken, humorous communication and dynamic moderation style. He will take over the 4G panel from Ron Wilson at the Globalpress Summit2009. The panel is on Tuesday, March 31 at 9:30.
For those Ron Wilson lovers (I am one of them) don’t despair, Ron will be there for interviews and grilling the speakers – he is just too busy before the Summit when the moderators are required to work with the company speakers.
Look forward to a great discussion about  “The Promise and Peril of 4G Networks”.

Chasing some encouraging news …. Please keep looking – you’ll find it tucked away

Are you also tired of constant depressing news, mass layoffs, bank fraud, credit crunch, stimulus or no stimulus, foreclosures, mortgage disaster? Need I say more?
I find myself flipping over articles in BusinessWeek, Newsweek, San Jose Business Journal and the business section of the San Jose Mercury News.  As a marketing executive, of course I zone in the “On the Move” section. Most days I find one of our clients listed which shows me once again: I am a true Silicon Valleyan now (did I just create that word?) and have lived through several down-turns.
Anyhow, on Saturday, February 14, I had the luxury of actually reading the Mercury News, nursing, no not Starbucks, but my own home made coffee. And here it is, page 2C of the business section – a tucked-away, Bloomberg News, tiny little mention with the subheading CHIPS.
It says that the chip sector was the only industry in the S&P 500 to rise on Friday and inventory is declining.
Mercury News: Could we have this as a headline on the Front Page next time?  Because, hey, we have most the major chip makers right here and we need some encouraging news.

Jack Harding says…

I like people like Jack Harding from eSilicon because finally someone says it like I did in October – There is still business (eSilicon speak “ IC design activity ”)  out there – you just have to find it.
My mantra is still “Let’s keep going – and find those companies who have an announcement, new products. The  world needs to know about it. Those companies will come out as shining stars and customers will buy there design, chip or whatever.

I just heard from one of “my” Chinese editors from Asiapress that she included my positive chatter in her story in China Electronics News. So now people in China know that I have a flat panel TV!!  But they also will know about news from QuickLogic, SiTime, Gennum, G2. Linear Tech -- all those companies who announced products in December.

At the upcoming Summit09 we have a panel on the very topic “low cost FPGAs or custom silicon” and I wish Jack Harding would be on the panel and cheer us up a little.

Does Frustration have to go here…

You all know by now that I am working as the liaison between chip companies and international electronics media. You also know that for 23 years I am outspoken about the need to have a good story (i.e. clear message) so the editors can make a story for their readers. Their readers are your potential customers or partners.
I have heard it all, no budget, no news, no executive available, not good timing etc.  But today I heard a new one by explaining the benefits of our service: the objection was that in these tough economic times they would not sponsor editors who just write up their press releases. I could detect the frustration in this man about not having budget to meet at our events but putting it on “my” editors? No way!
But it gets better… Looking up the history of coverage from previous events this smallish, yet exciting company, has gotten great coverage.
So I hope that the internal frustration does not go onto blaming others….
