Asian Press is coming to Silicon Valley in December 2008

When I started my agency in 1986 as Europress Connection, I never anticipated that I would eventually work so closely with Asian Press. In13 years we have built strong relationships with all major tech publications in China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Philipines and Singapore. Twice a year editors come to Silicon Valley to attend press tours  organized by Globalpress Connection. The next group comes December 1 - 4 2008:  Asiapress for Electronics

Thousands of articles were generated over the years. The tours have become  a crucial, cost effective and convenient part of established and start up companies PR plan. Job Cuts and Top Traders.....

According to the San Jose Mercury News recently, more job cuts are expencted at companies like Sirf and and Rambus. Right next to the article about job cuts is a listing of Silicon Valley Top Traders

This week the highest trader was  Richard Levy of Varian Medical and lowest was Mohanlal Snacheti of Vnus Medical. Modest trades around $30k by executives from Power Integration.

At least this week the gap of good and bad news is not so huge.

Semiconductor Outlook 2008/2009 - not scared....

What a ride this is again. After running Globalpress Connection over 20 years, having gone through so many ups and downs, I thought I am done with the downs. But no - there is no such thing as no change! What does it mean for my event agency? It means we will ride this out again. Why will this work for us? As a business principle we have never overcharged our  sponsors in boom times and try to apply the German frugality to the down times. We have to work even harder to attract new sponsors and the attending editors have to write more -- but what's wrong with that. I am not scared because the trust, loyalty and fun our events bring to the semiconductor industry is worth any effort.

What annoys international reporters......

No one wants to hear it here in the US: Tailor your press releases to European or Asian standard. Is there such thing? Of course! 

Bother to have a local contact person in addition to the main contact. Forget about direct quotes. No editor in Europe, for example, will print a quote from the press release. Wouldn't look too good if an editorial article shows the same quote all over. Instead, tell a story, mention a quantifiable result that will intrigue an editor to call you for a direct quote. Localize so the editor doesn't have to spend his/her time working on your lenghty sentences and make sense out of. If you want more tips send me an email, I have plenty more examples that annoy editors in Europe and Asia. Your pick up rate will dramatically increase.

Mike Green is leaving....

Here is another long-term reporter/editor who is taking a break from journalism and the publishing scene. Too much demand to have a life, it seems to me. His passion of writing books might be satisfied with more time on his hand. Good reading, I find is "The Nearly Man", Chapter 5 "A Design for Life" dealing with Charles Darwin and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck. Mike told he will be in touch in 2009 - let's hope so.

I have turned from a Silicon Valley PR chick to a what one of my of same-age friend calls now PR broad  and have kind of grown up and old with David.
